From Permed and Awkward to Hollywood Star: Rare School Photos of Jennifer Lawrence Before Fame

She’s been an absolute stunner on the red carpet while promoting The Hunger Games, but new images of Jennifer Lawrence prove that even glamorous movie stars go through an awkward period.
In recently surfaced images from her Louisville, KY Kammerer Middle School yearbook, a gawkier version of the 21-year-old Oscar nominee is seen wearing sweatpants and her Dance Cheer Group uniform.
In 2004, the soon-to-be-world-famous seventh grader was voted ‘most talkative’ and she is seen in one image chatting on her cell phone.

Even movie stars get bad perms: Jennifer, pictured in blue, loved riding horses and playing sports while in 8th grade at Kammerer Middle School
Even her nickname growing up was ‘Nitro’ because she was so energetic.
But the blonde beauty once told the L.A. Times that she was miserable at school.

‘I always felt dumber than everybody else.’ she said, revealing that a maths teacher once embarrassed her for not understanding a lesson.

‘I hated it. I hated being inside. I hated being behind a desk. School just kind of killed me.’
After appearing in church plays, Jennifer graduated high school two years early so that she could begin her acting career.

Just call her ‘Nitro’: In the 2004 Kammerer Middle School yearbook 7th grader Jennifer Lawrence was voted ‘most talkative.’

Jennifer’s mother, Karen, runs a summer camp, and her father, Gary, used to run a construction business. She also has two older brothers, Ben and Blaine, who still live in Louisville.

During an appearance on Chelsea Lately yesterday, the actress talked about how her brothers still tease her.

When asked how her brothers reacted to her newfound fame, ‘They don’t care. I don’t think they really get it. They just keep telling me I’m ugly,’ she said.

‘Ever since I was a kid. We were in Whole Foods and I was on a lot of the magazine covers. And I was like God, I’m going to be one of those people everybody hates, because it’s like, “Hey here I am!” like all the time and it’s just like “Get out of my face.

Jennifer beat out actresses like Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin, Emma Roberts, Saoirse Ronan, Chloë Moretz, and Shailene Woodley for the career-launching role of huntress Katniss Everdeen.

The film grossed a staggering $19.7 million from its first showings in the U.S., making it the highest midnight total ever for a non-sequel.

Based on this $19.7 million figure, experts predict that the The Hunger Games should take in at least $50 million on Friday and could reach as high as $150 million over the full weekend.

The $90 million dollar movie adapted from Suzanne Collins’s novel is set in the distant future in the United States, ruled from the Capitol of Panem by a sinister President Snow.

The Hunger Games are an annual battle to the death, fought on live television by 24 adolescents chosen by lottery from Panem’s 12 districts as punishment for rebellion decades before.

Seabiscuit director Gary Ross directs a star-studded cast headed by Oscar nominee Lawrence, who first impressed in Winter’s Bone, as courageous 16-year-old heroine Katniss, who volunteers for the Games in her younger sister’s place.

The cast includes Josh Hutcherson, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, and Elizabeth Banks and rock star Lenny Kravitz as Cinna, the stylist who transforms Katniss into ‘the girl on fire.’

Jennifer appears to have a refreshing attitude to her fame, telling US Weekly that she refuses to diet and therefore is happy to look ‘a little chubby’ on camera.

She said: ‘I’m miserable when I’m dieting, and I like the way I look. ‘I’m just so sick of these young girls with diets.’

‘I think it’s really important for girls to have people to look up to and feel good about themselves.’

Lawrence, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2010 for Winter’s Bone, was recently named the number 47 most desirable woman by Ask Men.

She is in a relationship with actor Nicholas Hoult, whom she met in 2010 on the set of X-Men: First Class.

Up next for the busy actress is the horror-thriller House at the End of the Street.

In the film, out on September 21, Jennifer’s character and her mother (Elisabeth Shue) move to a new town and find themselves living next door to a house where a young girl murdered her parents.

When the daughter befriends the surviving son, she learns the story is far from over.
